There are many cases in power systems when input to the primer mover fails.
In such cases the prime mover stops converting mechanical energy to electrical energy. If alternator is operating in operating in parallel with other alternators, it will start operating as synchronous motor running at synchronous speed.
This motoring condition is technically referred as inverted running of alternator.
