Role of Commutator in DC Machines

The commutator in DC machines is the rotating cylindrical part of the machine that is placed at the end of the armature. It helps to collect current from armature conductors. A commutator takes the AC current from armature conductors and converts it to DC current and then serves the DC current to external load.

The commutator is made of hard-drawn wedged shaped copper segments that are insulated from each other using a thin layer of mica. A copper lug is used to connect the segments to armature conductors.
