Why Coal is Pulverized before Combustion in Steam Power Station

In a steam power station, coal is stored in a coal storage plant.

After that coal is delivered to the coal handling plant where it is pulverized.

The term pulverization means to reduce or to convert to fine particles.

The pulverization of coal (crushing into small pieces) is done in order to increase its surface exposure, thus promoting rapid combustion without using large quantities of excess air.

Once the coal is pulverized, it is fed to the boiler using belt conveyors.
