Generator Efficiency Formula

The efficiency of a generator is defined as the ratio of power output in watts to power input in horsepower. The mathematical formula expression of generation efficiency is as follows:

Where

Pout = Power output in watts

Pin = Power input in horsepower

Eff (%) = Percentage Efficiency

Example Problem

Example

The power output of a 3-phase synchronous generator is 24 MW and a power input of 36000 horsepower. Find the efficiency of the alternator.

Solution:

Eff (%age) = (Pout/Pin)*100

 = 24 MW/(36000 HP * 746) * 100 — ∵ 1 HP = 745 Watts

 = (24000000/26856000) * 100 = 89%
