A diesel power plant is a power station in which the diesel engine is used as the prime mover for electric power generation. Given below are a few disadvantages of diesel power plants.

  1. High fuel costs: The diesel power plant has high running charges since the diesel employed for running the engine is costly
  2. Performance under overloading: In case overloading conditions persist for longer periods of time, the diesel power engine does not perform satisfactorily.
  3. Not suitable for bulk power generation: For bulk power applications, the diesel power plant is not an ideal choice, it can only generate small power
  4. Lubrication costs: The lubrication costs associated with the plant is generally high
  5. High maintenance costs: The maintenance charges associated with power plants are generally high
