Answer: ACSR stands for aluminum conductor steel reinforced and it is one of most commonly employed composite conductor for overhead transmission lines.


Aluminum is a good conductor of electricity. Its good conduction properties make it very popular to be used in transmission lines. However, its lower tensile strength introduces heavy sag problems in transmission lines. A core of galvanized steel is added with aluminum for improving its tensile strength for longer spans of transmission lines.

Generally, ACSR contains a central steel core surrounded by a number of aluminum strands.

In such configuration, Al is responsible for carrying current, while steel provides essential mechanical strength to the conductor.
